Prof. emeritus Dr. István Joó passed away

Prof. Dr. Sc. István Joó, maybe the most influencial Hungarian personality of the profession of geodesy, surveying and mapping died after five decades of active carrier on 5th August 2007

His activity established the fundaments of the Spatial Data Infrastructure and thanks to his vision and ambitions Hungary has two centres of excellence at FÖMI: the Satellite Geodetic Observatory and the worldwide known Remote Sensing Centre.

After leaving his leading position at the Department of Lands and Mapping in the Ministry of Agriculture, he became professor and director general of the College on Surveying Land Management (today: Faculty of Geoinformatics) of the University of West Hungary at Székesfehérvár, and Editor in Chief of the Journal Geodéza és Kartográfia. He was also re-elected President of the Hungarian Society of Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing. As distinguished member of the Committee of Geodetic Science of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences his contribution to the achievments in geosciences is also widely acknowledged.
